Gone to the Dogs

A quarter-mile lane leads to a house set on forty manicured acres.  Folks around Stewartsville know that Lyle and Debby Steinman live there but they’re often puzzled how folks that don’t “leave for work” make a living.  From the road it looks like any modern rural lifestyle acreage with a family that seems preoccupied by playing with dogs.

Old Tricks for a New Puppy

“It was a dark and stormy night.  Really,” according to Jim Rieser.  “One of those mid-winter nights in east central Wisconsin when the temperature was 30 below zero, the wind blew snow in gusts up to 40 miles per hour, and the wind-chill dropped to the minus 50º range,” Reiser recollects. “Sonny, my new German shorthair pointer puppy, wasn’t enjoying any of this.  Only 12 weeks old, he had never seen bare ground because of constant snow cover and he had never spent much time outside because of the deadly cold.
Good Neighbors choose good fences

Good Neighbors Choose Good Fences

Most of us can remember a time when there were city people and country folk. People in the city had the luxury of movie theaters, chain stores and shopping centers. People in the country had fresh air, fresh food and wide open spaces. It seems that, in the past few decades, a metamorphosis has occurred - the city is moving closer to the country and the wide open spaces seem to be getting smaller.

Hunting on your land

Hunting on your Land

There are fewer hunters in the US than there were a few years ago—but they're spending more on their hobby.  The US Fish and Wildlife Service sponsors a National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation every five years; and the 2006 survey found 12.5 million people 16 years old and older had spent a total of 220 million days engaged in hunting.

Earth Friendly Bags

Did You Know:

Reusing a bag meant for just one use has a big impact. A sturdy, reusable bag needs only be used 11 times to have a lower environmental impact than using 11 disposable plastic bags.

In New York City alone, one less grocery bag per person per year would reduce waste by 109 tons and save $11,000 in disposal costs.

Plastic bags carry 80% of the nation's groceries, up from 5% in 1982.

When 1 ton of paper bags is reused or recycled, 3 cubic meters of landfill space is saved and 13 - 17 trees are spared! In 1997, 955,000 tons of paper bags were used in the United States.

When 1 ton of plastic bags is reused or recycled, the energy equivalent of 11 barrels of oil are saved.
